ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

Do you enjoy the Spider-Man character? Are you sick of seeing Spider-Man origin stories? Guess what… This movie is for you!

Comic book movies inherently lend themselves better to animation because of what the source material is. More times than not, animated comic book films are not treated with the same love (as well as not given the same budget) that live-action films are. This was certainly not the case with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This movie deserves to be looked at with every live-action comic book movie, every statue chasing tear-jerker and every other serious, legitimate piece of cinema.

This is not the story of Peter Parker, this is the story of Miles Morales, a boy with a Latina mother and black father, who, yes, is bitten by a spider, giving him superhuman abilities. This sets the stage for the best Spider-Man movie ever made, without question.

Phil Lord, of The LEGO Movie fame, crafted a wonderful screenplay that did everything it needed to do. The movie was fully aware of the Spider-Man films that came before it. It felt sort of like a page from the Deadpool playbook, but the meta nature of this film was much more controlled than in anything you will find in Deadpool. While the jokes may not be as funny, they were executed better. The comedy was pure Spider-Man, through and through. We were given the perfect embodiment of what Spider-Man should be, not too much of this or too little of that.

The animation in this movie was other-worldly. The goal was to create a blend of hand drawn animation with your current typical animation style, and they succeeded with flying colors. Every frame was beautiful to look at. The colors popped with vibrancy and there was texture to the images that I am not sure if I have seen in an animated movie before. The sight scenes and web slinging were a thrill and it felt like you were right in the middle of the action.

This is the best comic book movie of the year. This is the best Spider-Man movie ever made. This is one of my favorite movies I have ever seen. I cannot recommend Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse enough. Go see this movie. You will be smiling and laughing throughout, but will also be touched by the heartfelt story. I had high expectations going into this, but was blown away with how much I enjoyed it. A couple possible minor continuity errors aside, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a perfect film.
