Another day, another movie I should have seen in the proper theatrical format. Not only am I a sucker for destruction on massive scales, but this one features giant robots fighting giant aliens. And unlike Transformers, it was actually pretty damn cool. Del Toro clearly has an eye; there are some really good shots in here and the action is solid, trading fast pace and jerky editing for big hits and cool points. That’s not a complaint, either, as it felt good watching something that felt different from the standpoint of the action sequences. There are some set pieces to marvel at here, and while none of the acting blew me away, nothing was offensive either. Idris Elba even tried to channel his inner Bill Pullman for the big speech, swapping “Today we celebrate our Independence Day” out for “Today we cancel the Apocalypse,” in a moment that had me smiling ear to ear instead of standing and clapping. I’m not sure if that was the point or not but it was fun. And that, to me, is all a movie like this needs to be. I guess I should check out the sequel then, shouldn’t I?
