Film of the Day (08/18/18): Kubo and the Two Strings

Written By Marc Haimes and James Schamus
Directed By Travis Knight

I had never heard of this until recently, and when I saw that it had such great reviews, I knew I had to get on it. The animation is breathtaking,  between the gorgeous scenery, lively characters and the wonders of the origami magic. It is an epic, triumphant tale about the importance of storytelling, memory and culture. While it has some very real themes of sorrow running throughout, the payoff is grand and invokes genuine emotion. We pass stories down through the generations, and a movie like this can not only kickstart a child’s imagination, but encourage us to impart on them the importance of family and preserving the memories of lost loved ones. This is the kind of family movie that can truly be enjoyed by all levels, as the parents will get more out of it than the kids, but everyone will be wowed. I loved this, and it was really great to start my Saturday off by snuggling with my daughter while watching it.
