Haiku Review: Hereditary

Written by Ari Aster
Directed by Ari Aster

The death of a woman sets disturbing occurrences in motion for her daughter and her family.

Starts Great but Lost Steam;
Weird for Sake of Being Weird;
Nice Composition.

I thought I would love this film, from the opening 30 minutes or so. The slow burn nature of the film fizzled out before we ever arrived at the “WTF” ending that everyone wants to talk about. For me, the ending was just the icing on the cake to a let down of a movie. I thought it was filmed wonderfully. The direction was stellar, which is pretty hit-or-miss in these types of movies. I like the idea… but the execution did not work for me. The backstory seems more interesting than the story we were told. Hereditary is a movie I would happily watch a prequel of. I think this movie is very polarizing and will garner a lot of conversation, so if you want to be a part of that, take my “rating” with a grain of salt and go see it in the theater. If you have no “fear of missing out”, just wait… I have a feeling by the time it’s available to rent/buy the conversation will be pretty much dead. There are better movies to watch, including ones that you probably haven’t seen.
