Film of the Day (03/21/18): Cowboy Bebop – Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Written By Keiko Nobumoto
Directed By Shinichiro Watanabe, Tensai Okamura & Yoshiyuki Takei

Way back, probably fifteen years ago, I caught the last twenty or so minutes of this when my roommate and my brother were watching it and I had just got home. I was a big fan of the series, thanks to them, so I sat down and finished it, but never gave it a full screening until now and man, I’m glad I did.

With a plot revolving around a large-scale terrorist attack and a release in late 2001, a lot of people were turned off at the time, feeling that it hit too close to home (even though it was produced well beforehand and released in Japan 10 tens prior to the WTC attacks). So maybe it’s a good thing that I waited and put some distance between those events and this screening.

Simply put, if you like Bebop you’ll love this. It has all the hallmarks of the show: Slick dialogue, great visuals, amazingly-staged action sequences set to a badass jazz score (thanks, Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts), and a diverse set of characters. Our lovable crew of bounty hunters just want to eat, and a major bounty has just popped up. But can they catch him before he unleashes a massive biological attack the likes of which have never been seen before?

Even if you’re not an anime fan, I recommend this. Bebop is just about the only anime I ever really got into (along with some Samurai Champloo but I didn’t get very far). Good stories are good stories, regardless of how they’re told. So sit down and enjoy some out-of-this-world action.

See you, space cowboy…
