Wow, this was an excellent film! I get why it was nominated for so many awards. The story is simple, a boy growing up in Texas from first grade through the day he moves into college. But the trip is, they use the same actors. They shot the film over a 12 year span, with no finished script, a few weeks every year until they had a final project. It’s very ambitious, and plays out wonderfully. Linklater is incredible at directing genuine human stories that don’t feel forced or sensational. I feel like his work flies under the radar quite often, but having watched this and Last Flag Flying recently, I’m reminded of just how damn talented he is. Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Richard’s daughter Lorelei do wonderful work here, portraying a fractured family trying to figure everything out as time sneaks up on them.
This was really, really great.
