Martin McDonagh is three for three (with this, In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) with a unique voice and a way of giving film-goers themes to ponder, violent imagery and slick dialogue, all while allowing them to have an uproariously good time at the movies. He’s one of my favorite working directors, based on just three films.
You could sum it up by simply saying it’s about a mob boss getting his dog stolen. Or that it’s about an Irish screenwriter named Martin writing a film called Seven Psychopaths (is that meta? I’m not sure I know what meta is but that sounds meta). Or you could say it’s about the virtue of peace in violent times.
Or you could just sit back and spend two hours having a great time watching a great film.
It’s so much fun…it’s criminal.
